The night before the crowning

Valmiki · Ayodhya Kanda
2.1.4–2.9.66 (CrEd 2.1.8–2.9.47)

Old, and shaken by evil dreams and omens, King Dasharatha resolves with his assembly to consecrate Rama as prince the next day under Pushya, while Bharata is away from the city. Kaikeyi's maid Manthara sees Ayodhya decked for the rite; Kaikeyi at first rejoices and rewards her, but Manthara turns her mind, reminding her of the two boons the king once granted her on the battlefield. Kaikeyi goes to the chamber of anger, casts off her ornaments and lies down on the bare earth.

Translation

The king too, of great splendour, remembered
his two sons who were far away,
Bharata and Shatrughna both,
like great Indra and Varuna.
Seeing his son graced with these
many virtues beyond compare,
King Dasharatha, scorcher of foes,

turning and turning in his heart:
