The king's confession, and his death

Valmiki · Ayodhya Kanda
2.61.1–2.65.23 (CrEd 2.55.1–2.59.10)

Grieving for Rama, Kausalya reproaches Dasharatha, and the king remembers a sin of his youth: shooting by sound in the dark, he killed an ascetic's son drawing water for his blind parents, and the father cursed him to die of grief for a son. Telling it to Kausalya, the king longs in vain to see Rama and dies after midnight; at dawn the palace women find him and raise the cry.

Hearing these words, cast in cruel sounds,
the king, in his sorrow, swooned;
then the lord of earth sank into grief,
and remembered again his own misdeed.
So by Rama’s mother, angry

made to hear harsh words;
and in his sorrow he fell to thinking.
And as he thought, there rose before him
the evil deed that he had done
long ago, in ignorance,
as one who shoots by sound.
