The council; Vibhishana cast out

Valmiki · Yuddha Kanda
6.6.1–6.36.22 (CrEd 6.6.1–6.27.22)

Shamed by what Hanuman has done to Lanka, Ravana calls his council; his commanders boast that each alone will kill Rama, but Vibhishana begs him to give Sita back. Ravana calls his brother the shame of their clan, and Vibhishana rises into the sky with four rakshasas and leaves him. When Rama's army has crossed, old Malyavan too counsels peace; Ravana refuses to bow, posts his captains at the gates, and goes into his palace, already in the power of Death.
