The sleeper woken

Valmiki · Yuddha Kanda
6.60.1–6.65.52 (CrEd 6.48.1–6.53.45)

Routed by Rama, Ravana comes back to Lanka shaken and has his brother Kumbhakarna woken from the sleep laid on him by Brahma's curse; the rakshasas rouse him with din and blows and a thousand elephants, and he eats and drinks. Before Ravana he chides his brother for the folly they foresaw in council, then soothes him and vows to kill Rama, scorning Mahodara's scheme. Adorned by Ravana and taking on a giant form, he goes out to battle amid dread omens, driven by the force of Death.

Translation

For by nature he is splendid,
this Kumbhakarna, mighty;
the other rakshasa lords
have strength made of boons.
No sooner was he born
than, racked with hunger, the great one
devoured thousands upon thousands
of living creatures.
…
Then, in wrath at great Indra,
Kumbhakarna the mighty
tore the tusk from Airavata
and struck Vasava on the breast.

with spear and hammer in hand;
for the vanaras are great of spirit,
swift and resolute;
one who is alone, or careless,
they could bring down with their teeth.

With golden armlets and bracelets,
adorned with ornaments of gold,
Kumbhakarna, the great-eared,
shone like a well-fed fire.
Gleaming with a great dark girdle
about his hips,
he was Mandara at the churning of the nectar,
bound by the serpent.
The golden armour, proof against weight and wind,
bright as lightning, blazing as with its own light,
bound on him, he shone
like the king of mountains wrapped in evening cloud.

he slain, all is slain;
him I will kill in battle.

roared most dreadfully,
and the earth with its seas and forests
shook.
Jackals of dreadful form howled
with mouths full of flame,
and the birds wheeled
in circles to the left.

as he went along the road;
his eye throbbed,
his left arm trembled.
Then a blazing meteor fell
with a fearful sound;
the sun lost its light,
