A brother arrives with the news

Valmiki · Ayodhya Kanda
2.94.1–2.113.1 (CrEd 2.88.1–2.105.1)

At Chitrakuta an army's dust rises, and Lakshmana, seeing Ayodhya's banner, takes Bharata for an enemy; Rama calms him. Bharata comes on foot, falls at Rama's feet and tells him their father is dead, and Rama offers water to the king at the river. Rama will not break his father's word, so Bharata takes his brother's sandals to rule in his name.

dwelling outside the city,
placing the rule of the kingdom
on your sandals, scorcher of foes.

Subtitle

Fourteen years I will wear bark and matted hair,
and live outside the city, waiting for you.
Your sandals will hold the kingdom.
