English
Here on this bare ground, charioteer,
quickly spread kusha grass for me;
I will sit against my noble brother
until he shows me grace.
Without food, without light,
like a brahmin robbed of his wealth,
I will lie before the hut
until he turns back.

English
What have I done, Bharata, dear one,
that you would sit against me?
A brahmin may lie on one side
and hold men back by this;
but for those anointed as kings
there is no rule of sitting against another.
Rise, tiger among men,
and give up this harsh vow.

and said to the people of town and country:
“Why do you not counsel my noble brother?”

for that very reason we cannot

I do not ask my father for the kingdom,

I myself will dwell
