The fourteen at the hut

Valmiki · Aranya Kanda
3.18.25–3.23.25 (CrEd 3.17.25–3.22.25)

Disfigured, Shurpanakha falls before her brother Khara, and he sends fourteen rakshasas to kill Rama, Lakshmana and Sita. Rama warns them off, and when they attack, fourteen arrows kill them all. Shurpanakha shames Khara, and he marches with fourteen thousand rakshasas, laughing at the omens.

English

Taking his bow and drawing it,
aiming at the rakshasas,
Raghava loosed his arrows,
as Indra looses thunderbolts.
Gold-feathered, adorned with gold,
the arrows blazed,
and in the sky they shone
with the splendour of great meteors.
Piercing with force the rakshasas’ chests,
drenched in blood,
they flew out and sank into the ground
with a sound like thunder.
Their hearts split open, to the ground
like trees cut at the root
they fell, their limbs wet with blood,
mangled, their life gone.
