Fourteen thousand

Valmiki · Aranya Kanda
3.24–3.30 (CrEd 3.23–3.29)

Reading the omens, Rama sends Lakshmana with Sita to a mountain cave and faces Khara's fourteen thousand alone. He kills Dushana, then three-headed Trishiras, and at last Khara himself with the arrow Agastya gave him. The gods and the sages hail him: the Dandaka forest is safe again.

With eight shafts he felled the charioteer
where he stood in the chariot,
and with one arrow Rama cut down

Then, as the night-ranger leapt
from the wrecked chariot,
Rama pierced his heart with arrows,
and he was stunned.
And with three hundred swift arrows,
Rama, of boundless spirit, in his anger,
