in all the world, lord of the world:
this is an illusion, no doubt of it.

राघव, धरती के स्वामी, धरती पर ऐसा कोई मृग नहीं, जो रत्नों से जड़ा हो। यह माया है। इसमें कोई संदेह नहीं।
Subtitle
Lord of the earth,
no deer on earth is like this,
patterned with gems.
It is a trick, beyond doubt.

आर्यपुत्र, वह सुंदर मृग मेरा मन हर रहा है। महाबाहो, उसे ले आइए। उससे हमारा मन बहलेगा।

samāptavanavāsānāṃ rājyasthānāṃ ca naḥ punaḥ
antaḥpuravibhūṣārtho mṛga eṣa bhaviṣyati
Translation
If the deer comes into your hands
while it still lives,
it will be a marvel;
it will fill all with wonder.
And when our forest years are done,
and we are in the kingdom once more,
this deer will be an ornament
for the inner palace.
लीला
यदि यह जीवित ही आपके हाथ आ जाए, तो कितना अद्भुत हो! वनवास पूरा होने पर, यह हमारे रनिवास की शोभा बनेगा।
Subtitle
If you catch it alive,
what a wonder that will be!
When our forest years are done,
it will grace our palace.

शष्पबृस्यां विनीतायाम् इच्छाम्य् अहम् उपासितुम् ॥
jīvan na yadi te 'bhyeti grahaṇaṃ mṛgasattamaḥ
ajinaṃ naraśārdūla ruciraṃ me bhaviṣyati
nihatasyāsya sattvasya jāmbūnadamayatvaci
śaṣpabṛsyāṃ vinītāyām icchāmy aham upāsitum
Translation
If this finest of deer
does not come into your hands alive,
then, tiger among men,
its lovely skin shall be mine.
On the golden skin
of this creature, once it is slain,
spread on a seat of tender grass,
I wish to sit.
लीला
नरशार्दूल, यह जीवित न पकड़ा जाए, तो इसकी सुंदर खाल तो रहेगी। नई घास पर बिछी उस सुनहरी मृगछाला पर, मैं बैठना चाहती हूँ।
Subtitle
If it cannot be caught alive,
its lovely skin remains.
I would sit on that golden hide,
spread over fresh grass.

This self-willed wish is harsh,

but the beauty of this creature

ऐसी मनमानी इच्छा कठोर मानी जाती है, स्त्री को शोभा नहीं देती। पर इस प्राणी का रूप देखकर, मैं अचरज से भर गई हूँ।
Subtitle
A wilful wish like this
is thought harsh, unfit for a woman.
But the sight of it
fills me with wonder.

See, Lakshmana, this longing
of Vaidehi’s, fixed upon the deer:
for the very excellence of its beauty,
this deer will not live past today.
Not in the forest, in the Nandana grove,
nor in the Chaitraratha garden,
much less on earth, Saumitri,
is there any deer its equal.
लीला
देखो लक्ष्मण, वैदेही इसे कितना चाहती है। ऐसा मृग न इन्द्र के नन्दन वन में है, न कुबेर के चैत्ररथ में। फिर धरती पर इसके जैसा कहाँ?
Subtitle
Look, Lakshmana, how Vaidehi longs for it.
No deer like this lives
in Indra's garden or Kubera's.
How could its equal be on earth?

देखो, जम्हाई लेते हुए इसकी जीभ मुँह से निकलती है, दमकती, आग की लौ-सी। जैसे बादल से बिजली।

See, as it yawns,
its tongue flickers from its mouth
like a flame,

यह मारीच की माया थी, लक्ष्मण ने पहले ही कहा था। वही हुआ। आज मेरे हाथों मारीच मारा गया।
Subtitle
This was Maricha's trick,
just as Lakshmana said.
It has come true:
it is Maricha I have killed.

Translation
Crying out with a great voice,
“Ha Sita! Ha Lakshmana!”,
this rakshasa has died: hearing it,
how will Sita be?
And mighty-armed Lakshmana,
to what state will he come?
लीला
यह राक्षस ऊँचे स्वर में "हा सीते! हा लक्ष्मण!" पुकारकर मरा है। यह सुनकर सीता का क्या हाल होगा? और महाबाहु लक्ष्मण का क्या होगा?

He died crying out,
"Ha Sita! Ha Lakshmana!"
