Translation
These two, surely sent by Vali
into this forest, hard to pass,
have come here roaming in disguise,
dressed in bark cloth.
लीला
छाल के वस्त्र पहने ये दोनों इस दुर्गम वन में छद्मवेश में घूमते हुए यहाँ आए हैं। निश्चय ही इन्हें वाली ने भेजा है।
Subtitle
These two, in bark cloth,
roam this pathless forest
in disguise.
Vali has sent them, surely.

Translation
The one you fled from in alarm,
bull among monkeys,
Vali, cruel and cruel to look on,
I do not see here.
The one you fear, gentle one,
your elder brother of evil deeds,
that wicked Vali, is not here;
I see nothing for you to fear.
लीला
जिस क्रूर वाली से डरकर आप भागे थे, आपका वह पापी बड़ा भाई, यहाँ नहीं है। मुझे यहाँ कोई भय नहीं दिखता।
Subtitle
The cruel Vali you fled from,
your wicked elder brother,
is not here, my lord.
I see nothing to fear.

buddhivijñānasaṃpanna iṅgitaiḥ sarvam ācara
na hy abuddhiṃ gato rājā sarvabhūtāni śāsti hi
Translation
Ah, monkey, your branch-dweller’s nature
is plain indeed to see,
you who, so light of mind,
cannot hold yourself steady in thought.
With wit and understanding,
do all things by the signs;
for a king fallen into folly
cannot govern all beings.
लीला
अहो, आपका वानर-स्वभाव दिख रहा है। चंचल मन स्थिर नहीं रहता। संकेतों को पढ़िए। बुद्धिहीन राजा किसी पर शासन नहीं करता।
Subtitle
Ah, your monkey nature shows:
your mind is too light to hold steady.
Read the signs.
A king without sense rules no one.

Translation
Go to them as a common person,
monkey, and come to know them,
by their bearing, as the wary do,
by their looks and by their speech.

Stand face to face with them,
bull among monkeys, and ask
why they have entered this forest,
those two bowmen.

साधारण वेश में उनके पास जाओ। उनके रूप और वाणी से जानो कि ये धनुर्धर कौन हैं, और इस वन में क्यों आए।

Steadfast, golden-bright,
who are you two, clad in bark?
This king of mountains
is lit up by your radiance.
Fit for kingdoms, like the immortals,
how have you come to this land?

यह पर्वतराज आपकी प्रभा से जगमगा उठा है। आप राज्य के योग्य हैं, देवताओं जैसे। स्वर्ण-सी कांति वाले, छाल पहने आप दोनों कौन हैं?

This king of mountains
glows with your light.
You are fit for kingdoms, like immortals.

Translation
There is a righteous monkey,
a leader of troops, named Sugriva,
a hero wronged by his brother,
who wanders the world in grief.
I have come, sent by him,
by great-souled Sugriva,
king of the foremost monkeys:
a monkey named Hanuman.

सुग्रीव नाम के एक धर्मात्मा वानर-यूथपति, वीर, जिन्हें भाई ने छला है, दुखी होकर भटकते हैं। उन्होंने मुझे भेजा है। मैं हनुमान हूँ।

Righteous Sugriva
seeks friendship with you both.
Know me as his minister,
a monkey, son of the Wind,
hidden in a mendicant’s form
to do Sugriva a kindness,
come here from Rishyamukha,
going where I will, taking what form I will.
लीला
धर्मात्मा सुग्रीव आपसे मित्रता चाहते हैं। मुझे उनका मंत्री, पवनपुत्र जानिए, जो भिक्षु के वेश में छिपा है। मैं इच्छानुसार रूप धारण करता हूँ।
Subtitle
Sugriva wants your friendship.
I am his minister, the Wind's son,
hidden in a mendicant's form.
I take what form I will.

Translation
Hearing these words of his,
glorious Rama, his face glad,
said to Lakshmana,
his brother standing at his side:
“This is the minister
of great-souled Sugriva, lord of monkeys;
he has come to me, who was longing
for that very one.”

यह वानरराज महात्मा सुग्रीव का मंत्री है, जिन्हें मैं खोज ही रहा था। यह स्वयं मेरे पास आया है।
Subtitle
This is great Sugriva's minister,
the very one I was seeking.
He has come to me himself.

Translation
Speak, Saumitri, with sweet words
to this monkey, Sugriva’s minister,
who knows the art of speech,
who is full of warmth, a tamer of foes.

सौमित्र, सुग्रीव के इस मंत्री को मधुर वचनों से उत्तर दो। यह वाणी का मर्मज्ञ है, और स्नेह से बोलता है।
Subtitle
Answer him, Saumitri, with sweet words.
He is a master of speech,
and he speaks with warmth.

nānṛgvedavinītasya nāyajurvedadhāriṇaḥ
nāsāmavedaviduṣaḥ śakyam evaṃ vibhāṣitum
nūnaṃ vyākaraṇaṃ kṛtsnam anena bahudhā śrutam
bahu vyāharatānena na kiṃ cid apaśabditam
Translation
None untrained in the Rig Veda,
none who has not borne the Yajur Veda,
none who does not know the Sama Veda
could speak in such a way.
Surely he has heard all of grammar,
and heard it many times;
for though he has said so much,
not one word was wrongly spoken.

जिसने ऋग्वेद, यजुर्वेद और सामवेद न पढ़ा हो, वह ऐसा नहीं बोल सकता। निश्चय ही इसने पूरा व्याकरण पढ़ा है। इतना बोला, पर एक भी शब्द अशुद्ध नहीं।

No one untaught in the Rig,
the Yajur and the Sama Veda
could speak so.

Translation
There was a king named Dasharatha,
radiant, devoted to dharma;

दशरथ नाम के एक तेजस्वी, धर्मप्रेमी राजा थे। ये उनके ज्येष्ठ पुत्र हैं, जिन्हें लोग राम के नाम से जानते हैं।

There was a king, Dasharatha,
radiant, devoted to dharma.
This is his eldest son,
known to all as Rama.

While he was away, his wife was carried off
by a rakshasa who takes what form he will;

जब ये दूर थे, तब इच्छानुसार रूप बदलने वाला एक राक्षस इनकी पत्नी को हर ले गया। किसने हरा, हम नहीं जानते।
Subtitle
While he was away,
a shape-changing rakshasa
carried off his wife.
Who took her, we do not know.

Such as you, rich in wisdom,

by good fortune you have come into our sight.

आप जैसे बुद्धिमान, क्रोध और इंद्रियों को जीतने वाले पुरुषों से हमारे राजा को मिलना चाहिए। सौभाग्य है कि आप आए।

Men like you, wise,
masters of anger and the senses,
our king must meet.
It is our good fortune you came.

kariṣyati sa sāhāyyaṃ yuvayor bhāskarātmajaḥ
sugrīvaḥ saha cāsmābhiḥ sītāyāḥ parimārgaṇe
Translation
For he has fallen from the kingdom,
and Vali has made him his enemy;
robbed of his wife, in fear in the forest,
deeply wronged by his brother.
He will give you both his help,
Sugriva, son of the Sun,
and we with him,
in the search for Sita.
लीला
वाली ने उनका राज्य और पत्नी छीन ली। वे भय में जीते हैं। सूर्यपुत्र सुग्रीव हम सबके साथ सीता की खोज में आपकी सहायता करेंगे।
Subtitle
Vali took his kingdom and his wife;
he lives in fear.
Sugriva, the Sun's son,
will help you search for Sita.

So saying, Hanuman,
gently, in a sweet voice,
said to Raghava:

prasannamukhavarṇaś ca vyaktaṃ hṛṣṭaś ca bhāṣate
nānṛtaṃ vakṣyate vīro hanūmān mārutātmajaḥ
Translation
As this monkey, son of the Wind,
speaks to us so gladly,
he too has come with a need of his own;
your work is done, Raghava.
The colour of his face is clear,
and plainly he speaks with gladness;
heroic Hanuman, son of the Wind,
will not speak falsely.

ये प्रसन्न होकर बोल रहे हैं। इनके राजा का भी प्रयोजन है। राघव, आपका काम हुआ समझिए। इनका मुख निर्मल है, ये झूठ नहीं बोलेंगे।
Subtitle
He speaks gladly; his king needs us too.
Your work is as good as done, Raghava.

Born in the line of the Ikshvakus,

renowned in dharma,
keeper of his father’s command.

ये राम हैं, महाबुद्धिमान, दृढ़ पराक्रमी, जो अपने भाई लक्ष्मण के साथ आए हैं, इक्ष्वाकुकुल में जन्मे, दशरथ के पुत्र, पिता की आज्ञा के पालक।

receive them and honour them,
for both are most worthy of honour.

जब ये वन में रह रहे थे, एक राक्षस इनकी पत्नी को हर ले गया। ये आपकी शरण में आए हैं। इन्हें मित्र बनाइए, और इनका सत्कार कीजिए।

He comes to you for refuge.
Take them as friends, and honour them.

tan mamaivaiṣa satkāro lābhaś caivottamaḥ prabho
yat tvam icchasi sauhārdaṃ vānareṇa mayā saha
Translation
You are schooled in dharma,
valiant, kind to all;
the Wind’s son has told me truly
of your virtues.
So this is honour to me,
and the highest gain, my lord,
that you desire friendship
with me, a monkey.

Translation
Rama, my minister Hanuman,
best of counsellors, has told me
why you have come
to this empty forest:
that while you lived in the forest
with Lakshmana your brother,
a rakshasa carried off your wife,
Maithili, Janaka’s daughter,
weeping, parted from you
and from wise Lakshmana;
watching for his chance, he
killed the vulture Jatayu.

हनुमान ने मुझे बताया कि आप इस निर्जन वन में क्यों आए। जब आप और लक्ष्मण दूर थे, एक राक्षस आपकी रोती हुई पत्नी को हर ले गया।

From the grief of parting from your wife

or dwells in the sky,
I will bring your wife and give her to you,

शीघ्र ही आप इस दुख से मुक्त होंगे। वे पाताल में हों या आकाश में, मैं उन्हें खोए हुए वेद की भाँति लौटा लाऊँगा।

Translation
But I know by inference,
beyond doubt, it was Maithili:
I saw her carried off
by a rakshasa of cruel deeds,
crying, “Rama, Rama!”
and “Lakshmana!” in a broken voice,
writhing in Ravana’s lap
like the wife of a serpent king.

निश्चय ही वे मैथिली थीं, जिन्हें मैंने एक क्रूर राक्षस के द्वारा ले जाते देखा। वे पुकार रही थीं, "राम! राम! लक्ष्मण!", और रावण की गोद में नागिन-सी छटपटा रही थीं।

पर्वत पर हम पाँचों को देखकर उन्होंने अपना उत्तरीय और आभूषण गिरा दिए। हमने उन्हें सँभालकर रखा है। मैं लाता हूँ, आप पहचानिए।

Spoken to so by grieving Rama,
the monkey Sugriva,
with joined palms, in tears,
his voice choked with tears, said:
“I do not know at all
where that evil rakshasa dwells,
nor his strength, nor his valour,
nor the family of that low-born one.”

मैं नहीं जानता कि वह पापी राक्षस कहाँ रहता है, न उसकी शक्ति, न उसका पराक्रम, न उस नीच का कुल।
