The rains

Valmiki · Kishkindha Kanda
4.27.1–4.30.85 (CrEd 4.26.1–4.29.52)

With Sugriva crowned and gone into his cave, Rama and Lakshmana spend the rains on Prasravana hill, where Rama finds no joy, remembering Sita; Lakshmana rouses him, and Rama resolves to wait for autumn, seeing his own grief in the clouds, the lightning and the swollen rivers. When autumn clears the sky and Sugriva, lost in pleasure, makes no move, Rama swoons, laments, and sends Lakshmana to Kishkindha with a warning: the path Vali took is not closed.

Sugriva consecrated,
the monkey gone into his cave,
Rama came with his brother
to the hill of Prasravana,
loud with tigers and with deer,
ringed by lions of fearsome roar,
hidden in shrubs and creepers,
thronged with many trees,
haunted by bears and monkeys,
by langurs and by wildcats,
a mountain like a mass of cloud,
ever a home of pure water.

Translation

What use, noble one,
in yielding to longing’s sway?
Not Janaki, lord of Manu’s line,
guarded by you, is easy for another;
none who comes near the blazing crest of fire,
O worthiest of heroes, escapes the burning.

Subtitle

Why yield to longing, brother?
With you as her lord, Janaki is no easy prize.
No one nears a blazing flame
unburned.

Dark as the petals of blue lotus,

Rained on by the great clouds,
