this lord of the monkeys, to hear them,
from your lips least of all.
Sugriva is not ungrateful,
not crooked, nor yet cruel.
Subtitle
Not so, Lakshmana.
He does not deserve harsh words,
least of all from you.
He is not ungrateful, not false, not cruel.

forgotten the kindness done …
Long he lay in deep sorrow;

Translation
as Vishvamitra did not, the sage.
Clinging to Ghritachi, they tell,
for ten years, Lakshmana,
he thought it but a day,
the righteous, the great sage Vishvamitra.
For he knew not the time had come,
he, best of those who know time,
Vishvamitra of great splendour;
how much less a common man?

Translation
Unless those rakshasas are slain,
hard to assail, changing form at will,
Ravana cannot be slain,
he by whom Maithili was taken.
Nor can they be slain in battle
by one without allies, Lakshmana …
So Vali told it,
for he knew, the monkeys’ lord.
