Lakshmana at the gate

Valmiki · Kishkindha Kanda
4.31.1–4.36.20 (CrEd 4.30.1–4.35.20)

Lakshmana, angry that Sugriva has let the appointed time slip by, sets out to kill him, and Rama bids him speak gently. His fury at the gate of Kishkindha scatters the monkeys; Hanuman tells the alarmed Sugriva to join his palms and win Lakshmana's grace, and in the inner rooms Tara answers Lakshmana's harsh words and calms him. Sugriva casts off his fear and his drunkenness, promises to march behind Rama, and asks forgiveness, and Lakshmana asks his in turn.

English

When those words had been accepted,
the lord of the monkey hosts
cast off his great fear of Lakshmana
like a garment drenched.
Then the garland at his throat,
bright, many-stranded, great,
he tore away, and was sober,
Sugriva, lord of the monkeys.

Fortune lost, and fame,
and the lasting monkey kingdom,
by Rama’s grace, Saumitri,
I have won all this again …
I will march in the train
of the lord of men, bull among men,
as he goes to slay Ravana,
his foe, and all his followers.

in you, Sugriva, his protector,
and you so courteous above all …
With you for his ally, Sugriva,
Rama, the mighty,
will slay his foes in battle, and soon;
of this there is no doubt.

But quickly, hero, go out from here,
go out with me,
and comfort your friend,
grieving for his wife, carried off.
And what, hearing the words of Rama,
overwhelmed by grief,
I said to you in harshness,
that too you should forgive.
