Translation
While they fought on, the two,
monkeys and rakshasas,
the sun went down; the night came on,
the night that takes away life.
Bound each to each in enmity,
fearsome, each wanting victory,
then the night battle began,
of monkeys and rakshasas.

Translation
“You are a rakshasa!” the monkeys cried,
“and you a monkey!” the rakshasas;
they struck each other in the fight
in that dreadful dark.
“Kill! Tear! Come on!” and “Why do you run?”:
so the cry went up,
so great a din was heard
in that darkness.

Translation
Six night-rovers among them
Rama slew with six arrows,
in the space of an eye-blink,
sharp, like tongues of flame.
Then with gold-bright arrows
like tongues of flame,
the directions he made clear,
and the quarters, the mighty one.
The other rakshasa heroes
who stood to face Rama
perished too as they reached him,
like moths that reach the fire.
With gold-feathered arrows
falling in thousands,
the night shone bright,
like an autumn night with fireflies.

Translation
Angada, come up in battle
to strike down his foe,
swiftly slew Ravana’s son’s
charioteer, and his horses too.
Indrajit left his chariot,
horses slain, charioteer slain
by Angada; the great illusionist
vanished there and then.

Translation
Seeking his track, the prince,
Rama, of blazing might,
gave orders, mighty as he was,
to ten leaders of the monkey troops:
Sushena’s two sons,
and Nila, bull of the plavagas,
Angada, son of Vali,
and Sharabha the swift,
Vinata and Jambavan,
Sanuprastha of great strength,
Rishabha and Rishabhaskandha:
these the scorcher of foes commanded.
The monkeys, overjoyed,
lifting fearsome trees,
all entered the sky,
searching the ten directions.
Their speed, swift as they were,
with arrows swifter still,
master of weapons, with a supreme weapon,
Ravana’s son held back.
Torn and wounded by iron arrows,
the monkeys of fearsome speed
in the darkness could not see him,
like the sun hidden by clouds.

Translation
Me, fighting, unseen,
even Shakra, lord of the gods,
cannot see or come near;
how much less can you two!

जब मैं अदृश्य होकर लड़ता हूँ, तो देवराज इन्द्र भी न मुझे देख पाता है, न मुझ तक पहुँच पाता है। फिर तुम दोनों की क्या बिसात!

Translation
Then, every limb pierced,
both studded with arrowheads,
like great Indra’s banners
loosed from their ropes, they shook.
Swaying, the two heroes,
worn down, their vitals pierced,
the great archers fell to the earth,
the lords of the earth.
Rama fell first,
pierced in his vitals by arrows
of Indrajit in his wrath,
who once had conquered Shakra.
He lay on the hero’s bed,
holding his unstrung bow,
its grip loosed,
bent in three places, gold-adorned.

Searching the sky
and all the directions, the monkeys
could not see him, hid by illusion,
Ravana’s son, in the battle.
But him, hidden by illusion,
by illusion Vibhishana,
looking, saw: his brother’s son,
standing there.
Unmatched in deeds,
unrivalled in battle,
the hero, unseen, Vibhishana saw,
by the gift of a boon.

from this arrow-bond,
not by all gods and asuras together,
with the hosts of rishis.

खर और दूषण को मारने वाले, महाबली राम और लक्ष्मण, मेरे बाणों से गिरे पड़े हैं। देवता, असुर और ऋषि, सब मिलकर भी इन्हें इस बाण-बन्धन से नहीं छुड़ा सकते।

Translation
So addressed, all those
rakshasas who fight by deceit
were filled with wonder,
delighted by that deed.
All roared great roars,
like thunderclouds,
and, “Rama is slain,” knowing,
they honoured Ravana’s son.
Seeing then the two motionless,
Rama and Lakshmana,
breathless on the earth,
he thought them slain.
Filled with joy,
Indrajit, conqueror in battle,
entered the city of Lanka,
gladdening all the nairritas.

Steady yourself, monkey,
and me, who have no protector.
For those devoted to truth and dharma

ख़ुद को सँभालो, वानर, और मुझ बेसहारे को भी। जो सत्य और धर्म से प्रेम करते हैं, उन्हें मौत का डर नहीं होता।

राम को कुछ नहीं हुआ, राम मर नहीं रहे। जिनकी आयु पूरी हो जाती है, उनका तेज उन्हें छोड़ देता है। इनका तेज इन्हें नहीं छोड़ रहा।
Subtitle

The glow that leaves the dying

Translation
Indrajit, the great illusionist,
his whole army round him,
entered the city of Lanka
and went to his father.
There, saluting Ravana as he sat,
with joined palms,
he told his father the welcome news:
Rama and Lakshmana slain.
Then up he leapt in joy
and embraced his son,
Ravana, among the rakshasas,
hearing his foes were felled.

Sharabha, Gandhamadana,

abhyanujñātum icchāmi gamiṣyāmi yathāgatam … rāvaṇaṃ ca ripuṃ hatvā sītāṃ samupalapsyase
Translation
Friend Raghava, knower of dharma,
tender even to your foes,
I ask your leave to go;
I will go as I came. …
And, Ravana your foe slain,
Sita you will win back.
लीला
सखा राघव, शत्रुओं पर भी दया रखने वाले, अब मुझे आज्ञा दो; जैसे आया था, वैसे ही जाता हूँ। तुम रावण को मारकर सीता को फिर पाओगे।
Subtitle
Friend Raghava, kind even to your enemies,
give me leave; I go as I came.
You will kill Ravana
and win back Sita.

Translation
Having spoken these words,
Suparna, swift of stride,
having made Rama free of pain
amid the forest-dwellers,
walked round him, keeping him on his right,
embraced him, the mighty one,
and entered the sky and was gone,
Suparna, like the wind.

Translation
Seeing the Raghavas free of pain,
the monkey troop-leaders then
roared lion-roars
and lashed their tails.
Then they beat the kettledrums,
made the mridangas sound,
blew conches, overjoyed,
and cheered as before.
Slapping their arms again and again,
the valiant tree-fighting monkeys,
tearing up trees of every kind,
stood by hundreds of thousands.
Sending up great roars,
terrifying the night-rovers,
to Lanka’s gates they came,
the monkeys, eager to fight.
