He stepped over the rampart
on foot, like a mountain,
and saw the vanara host, a wonder,
massed like banks of cloud.
Seeing that best of rakshasas,
a mountain in his form,
like clouds before the wind
the vanaras fled to every quarter.
That fierce vanara host
running, broken like a net of cloud,
Kumbhakarna saw, and for joy
roared again, cloud-dark, like a cloud.
Hearing that dreadful roar of his,
like a rain cloud’s roar in the sky,
many monkeys fell to the earth
like sal trees cut at the root.
He roared a mighty roar
and made the ocean roar,
as if loosing thunderclaps,
as if shattering mountains.
Him whom Maghavan could not slay,

seeing him come, terrible-eyed,
the vanaras fled.

Translation
Then taking the wind-god’s great weapon,
Rama loosed it at the night-ranger;
with it he took the arm and club together,
and armless, the giant roared a tumult.
That arm of his, like a mountain peak,
club and all, cut by Raghava’s arrow,
fell upon the vanara king’s host
and slew that vanara army.
The vanaras left, broken and struck,
drew to the edge, downcast,
and with trembling limbs beheld the dread
clash of the lord of men and the rakshasa lord.
Kumbhakarna, his arm cut by the weapon,
like a great mountain shorn of its peak,
tore up a tree with his hand
and rushed in battle at the lord of men.
That arm of his, with the sal tree,
raised high like a serpent’s coils,
Rama took off with an Aindra-charged
arrow, inlaid with river gold.
Kumbhakarna’s severed arm
fell to the earth like a mountain,
and writhing, crushed trees and rocks,
boulders, vanaras and rakshasas.
Seeing him, his arms cut off,
rushing on him, suddenly roaring,
Rama took two sharp crescent arrows
and cut off the rakshasa’s feet in battle.
Subtitle
With the wind-weapon Rama cut off one arm,
with Indra's weapon the other,
and with two crescent arrows,
his feet.

Translation
Then Rama took up an arrow like the sun’s rays,
like Brahma’s rod, like Time the ender,
unfailing, Indra’s, sharp and fair-feathered,
swift as the wind.
That arrow, its feathers lovely with diamond and gold,
bright as the blazing sun and fire,
swift as great Indra’s thunderbolt,
Rama loosed at the night-ranger.
Sped by Raghava’s arm, the arrow,
lighting the ten directions with its own light,
blazing to the sight like a smokeless fire,
flew, mighty as Shakra’s thunderbolt.
That head, like the peak of a great mountain,
tusks bared, fair earrings swinging,
it cut from the lord of rakshasas then,
as Purandara once cut Vritra’s.
