Translation
In calamities, in hardships,
in war, at a bride’s own choosing,
at a sacrifice, at a wedding,
no fault lies in a woman’s being seen.
She is here in the midst of war,
and stands in great distress;
no fault can lie in her being seen,
and least of all in my presence.
So bring her near to me,
quickly, Vibhishana;
let Sita look on me, standing here
surrounded by my friends.

Tempted in many ways
and threatened, Maithili
gave that rakshasa no thought,
her inmost soul gone to you.
Pure in heart, without sin,
take her back, Raghava.
Nothing need be said;
I command you.

Translation
Surely, before the three worlds,
Sita had to be shown pure,
for this good lady dwelt long
in Ravana’s inner palace.
“A fool indeed, ruled by desire,
is Rama, son of Dasharatha”:
so the good would say of me,
had I not proved Janaki pure.

I too know that Maithili,
