The golden queen

Valmiki · Uttara Kanda
7.83.1–7.99.8 (CrEd 7.74.1–7.89.4)

Rama, wishing to build a bridge of dharma, proposes the Rajasuya; Bharata turns him from a rite in which the royal houses of the earth would perish, and Lakshmana urges the horse sacrifice, which once cleansed Indra of a brahmin’s slaying. At Naimisha on the Gomati the sacrifice runs a year and more, the monkeys and rakshasas giving without end. Rama takes no other wife: at every sacrifice a golden Janaki stands in the wife’s place.
