What is this, like a splendid hermitage,

यह कैसी जगह है? सुंदर आश्रम-सा लगता है, पर कोई मुनि नहीं। भगवन्, यह पहले किसका आश्रम था?

It looks like a fine hermitage,
yet no sage is here.

Translation
Come, I will tell you;
hear it truly, Raghava,
whose seat of penance this was,
cursed in anger by a great soul.
Gautama’s, best of men,
great-souled Gautama’s, it was once,
a hermitage divine to see,
honoured even by the gods.
Here he kept his penance
long ago, with Ahalya,
for many years upon years,
O prince of great renown.
लीला
सुनो राघव, इस आश्रम को क्रोध में शाप मिला था। यह महात्मा गौतम का आश्रम था, देवता भी इसे पूजते थे। यहीं वे बरसों-बरस अहल्या के साथ तप करते रहे।
Subtitle
This was great Gautama's hermitage,
honoured even by the gods.
Here he kept his penance with Ahalya,

Translation
Knowing his absence, the thousand-eyed,
the lord of Shachi,
wearing the sage’s guise, to Ahalya
spoke these words. …
The sage’s guise, the thousand-eyed:
she knew him, joy of the Raghus;
yet she set her mind on it, unwise,
for curiosity about the king of gods.
लीला
मुनि बाहर थे, तब इन्द्र उनका वेश धरकर अहल्या के पास आए। राघव, अहल्या ने उन्हें पहचान लिया। फिर भी देवराज के कौतूहल में, उसने नासमझी से हाँ कर दी।

Translation
… then he went out of the hut,
hurrying in his alarm, Rama,
fearful of Gautama.
And then he saw Gautama,
the great sage, coming in, …
drenched with the holy waters,
blazing like a fire,
holding firewood there,
with kusha, the bull among sages.

इन्द्र डरकर कुटिया से निकले, और सामने गौतम आ रहे थे: तीर्थ-जल से भीगे, आग-से दमकते, हाथ में समिधा और कुश।

mama rūpaṃ samāsthāya kṛtavān asi durmate

Translation
Then, seeing the thousand-eyed,
wearing the guise of a sage,
the sage, rich in right conduct, to the wrongdoer
spoke these words in fury:
“Taking on my form,
you have done, evil-minded one,
this deed not to be done; and so
you shall be fruitless.” …
Having cursed Shakra thus,
he cursed his wife as well.
लीला
अपना रूप धरे इन्द्र को देख, मुनि ने क्रोध में कहा: "मेरे रूप में तूने यह अनर्थ किया। तू निष्फल होगा।" फिर उन्होंने पत्नी को भी शाप दिया।

“Here for thousands of years,
for many, you shall dwell,
feeding on air, fasting,
burning in penance, lying on ash;
unseen by every living thing,
in this hermitage you shall dwell.”
लीला
हज़ारों बरस तू यहीं रहेगी, हवा पीकर, बिना अन्न के, राख पर सोती। इस आश्रम में कोई प्राणी तुझे देख न सकेगा।

Thousands of years you will live here,
on air, without food,

āgamiṣyati durdharṣas tadā pūtā bhaviṣyasi
tasyātithyena durvṛtte lobhamohavivarjitā
matsakāśe mudā yuktā svaṃ vapur dhārayiṣyasi
Translation
“When to this dread forest Rama,
the son of Dasharatha,
comes, he whom none can overcome,
then you shall be made pure.
By your welcome to him, wrongdoer,
freed of greed and folly,
at my side, filled with joy,
you shall bear your own body again.”
लीला
जिस दिन दशरथ का बेटा राम इस वन में आएगा, उस दिन तू पवित्र होगी। उसका अतिथि-सत्कार करके तू फिर अपना रूप पाएगी, और ख़ुशी से मेरे पास होगी।
Subtitle
When Rama, Dasharatha's son, comes,
you will be made pure.
Receive him as your guest,
and take your own form again, beside me.

Translation
So spoke the glorious one,
Gautama, to the wrongdoer;
and leaving this hermitage,
where siddhas and charanas dwell,
on a lovely Himalayan peak
he kept his penance, great ascetic.
लीला
यह कहकर महातेजस्वी गौतम इस आश्रम को छोड़ गए, और हिमालय की एक सुंदर चोटी पर तप करने लगे।
Subtitle
So saying, Gautama left this hermitage,
to keep his penance
on a lovely Himalayan peak.

her limbs wrapped round in smoke,
like the full moon’s light;
like the full moon’s light
veiled in frost and cloud;
hard to approach, in the midst of water,
like the blazing light of the sun.

“Well done, well done!” the gods cried,
and honoured her, Ahalya,
her body made pure by the strength of penance,
faithful to Gautama’s will.
