The bow

Valmiki · Bala Kanda
1.50.1–1.73.40 (CrEd 1.49.1–1.72.27)

At Mithila, King Janaka asks who the two young princes are, and Shatananda tells them of Vishvamitra's power through the tale of Trishanku. Janaka tells how Shiva's bow came to his house and how Sita rose from the furrow, promised only to strength; Rama lifts the bow and breaks it. Dasharatha comes, and the four brothers marry the four princesses of Mithila.

best of sages, shining
like flames of fire.
I am ready, I wait for you,
standing at this altar.
Let the king go ahead unhindered:
why is there delay?

Subtitle

My daughters are at the altar,
bright as flames of fire.
I stand ready for you.
Why the delay?
