The silent city; mother and son

Valmiki · Ayodhya Kanda
2.71.17–2.78.26 (CrEd 2.65.13–2.72.25)

After seven nights on the road Bharata reaches Ayodhya and finds the city silent and joyless. Kaikeyi tells him, as if it were good news, that his father is dead and that Rama is exiled at her asking; he casts off her and the kingdom, swears to Kausalya that he had no part in it, and performs his father's rites. When Shatrughna drags Manthara through the palace, Bharata stops him: Rama would never forgive the killing of a woman.

This city seems not glad to me,
with its holy gardens, famed:

Translation

Hearing Bharata’s words,
Shatrughna, Lakshmana’s younger brother,
turned back from his anger
and let Manthara go.
At Kaikeyi’s feet
Manthara fell down,
sighing, in deep distress,
and wept a piteous lament.
Stunned by Shatrughna’s handling,
the hunchback: Bharata’s mother saw her,
and slowly comforted the stricken one,
gazing about like a crane caught in a snare.

Subtitle

Bharata's mother slowly comforted the stunned hunchback,
who lay at her feet
looking about her
like a crane caught in a snare.
