Then all of Bharata’s mothers
came running together,
thin with fasting, wretched,
worn by their husband’s fall.
Weeping, they stood round him

Loving, as a cow her calf,
the ascetic queen held him close,

Translation
Not my wish, what my mother
said while I was away;
it gives me no joy,
nor do I accept her word.
I have come to that tiger among men
to win his grace,
to lead him back to Ayodhya,
and to bow at his feet.

I never wanted.
I have come to bring him home,
and to bow at his feet.

Translation
This is fitting in you, tiger among men,
born of Raghu’s line:
reverence for elders, self-command,
and walking in the steps of the good.
I knew it, set in your heart;
“Let it be made firm,” I thought,
and asked you, so to raise
your fame the higher.

as Aditi bore the Creator.
