The last day; Mandodari's lament

Valmiki · Yuddha Kanda
6.110.7–6.111.126 (CrEd 6.98.7–6.99.43)

Ravana lies slain on the field, and his wives come out of the inner palace to mourn him: he would not hear his friends or his brother, and fate has struck them all down. Mandodari, his eldest queen, laments her lord: how could a mere man have killed him, unless his own senses, and his desire for Sita, undid him? At Rama’s word Vibhishana gives his brother the rites and the fire, and consoles the women.

As if asleep, why do you not

honoured by you always,
the striker of foes in war,
adorned with a net of gold,
your club lies scattered,
cut by arrows into a thousand pieces.

लीला
