let gentle words alone be spoken.
Let us beg Vaidehi’s grace.
For, bowed to, she is gracious,
Maithili, Janaka’s daughter;
she is able to save you, rakshasis,
from the great fear.
Subtitle
Enough of cruel words; speak gently.

Bowed to, Janaka's daughter is gracious;
she can save you from the great fear.

Hearing the words of the rakshasa lord,
Ravana’s unwelcome words, pained by them,
Sita trembled, as at the forest’s edge
a young she-elephant set upon by a lion.

Translation
Bereft of joy, full of many sorrows,
this heart of mine must surely be hard,
since it does not split a thousandfold today,
like a mountain peak the thunderbolt strikes.

सुख से खाली, दुःख से भरा, मेरा यह हृदय सचमुच कठोर है। वज्र से टूटी चोटी की तरह, यह आज हज़ार टुकड़ों में नहीं फटता।

Translation
So Sita, lamenting in many ways,
remembering Rama with all her being,
trembling, her mouth parched,
came to the great tree in flower.
Standing there, she, tender in every limb,
took hold then of a branch of that tree.

Translation
To her so come, stricken, blameless,
her joy gone, her heart downcast,
the fair one, fair omens came,
as dependants come to a man whom fortune favours.
Her fine left eye, with curving lashes,
ringed with lines, dark, large, and white,
throbbed, the one eye of the lovely-haired,
like a reddish lotus a fish has struck.
And her arm, graceful, full and rounded,
worthy of rarest dark aloe and sandal,
long pillowed by her peerless beloved,
her left arm, quickly trembled.
And like a lordly elephant’s trunk, full,
one of the pair pressed close, finely formed,
throbbing again, her thigh
told of Rama standing before her.
Subtitle
Good omens came to her:
her left eye throbbed,
her left arm trembled, her left thigh quivered,
telling of Rama before her.

By these omens, and by others,
proved true of old by the good, awakened,
the fair-browed one, like a seed lost,
wilted by wind and sun, revived by rain, rejoiced.
Her grief gone, her weariness taken away,
her fever calmed, her heart woken with joy,
the noble lady shone with her face,
as the night with the cool-rayed moon risen.
