Two months

Valmiki · Sundara Kanda
5.18.1–5.22.46 (CrEd 5.16.1–5.20.41)

At the night's end Ravana comes into the Ashoka grove with a hundred women bearing lamps, while Hanuman hides in the leaves above, and he tempts the trembling Sita with riches, a kingdom and himself. With a blade of grass between them she refuses: she is another's wife, as inseparable from Raghava as light from the sun. Ravana gives her two months more, then death, orders the rakshasis to break her will, and is led away by Dhanyamalini.

misshapen, dark and tawny,
why have they not fallen to the earth,
base one, who look on me?
That righteous one’s wife,
Dasharatha’s daughter-in-law:
as you speak to me, why does your tongue,
sinner, not rot away?

Subtitle

Why do your cruel eyes
not fall to the earth?
Why does your tongue
not wither, sinner?

Translation

For want of Rama’s word,
and to keep my penance whole,
I do not make you ash, Ten-necked one,
with a fire fit to make you ash.

Subtitle

Rama has given no command,
and I keep my penance:
only for that, Ten-necked one,
I do not burn you to ash.

Hearing Sita’s words,
Ravana, lord of rakshasas,
opened wide his cruel eyes
and stared at Janaki:
like a dark rain cloud,
great of arm and neck,
lion-strong, lion-paced, splendid,
his tongue aflame, his eyes fierce.

Translation

Gazing at Vaidehi,
his eyes red with rage,
Ravana spoke to Sita,
hissing like a serpent:
“One fallen through ill conduct,
with nothing, you follow;
today I will destroy you,
as the sun with its might the twilight.”

Subtitle

You who follow a fallen man with nothing:
today I will end you,
as the sun's blaze
ends the twilight.

Translation

That Sita may come under my power
quickly, Janaki,
so act, rakshasis,
all of you, gathering quickly.
With harshness and with kindness,
with soft words, gifts and division,
turn Vaidehi,
and with the lifted rod.

make Janaki yield to me, quickly.
Harsh by turns, and gentle:
soft words, gifts, division, the rod.

Take your pleasure with me, great king;
what is this Sita to you?
He who desires the unwilling,
his body burns with fever;
he who desires the willing,
his is a lovely joy.
