Shown them lying dead, from the sky

Valmiki · Yuddha Kanda
6.47.5–6.48.37 (CrEd 6.37.5–6.38.37)

Sure that Indrajit has slain Rama and Lakshmana, Ravana has Sita flown over the battlefield in the Pushpaka with Trijata, and proclaims their death through a Lanka hung with flags. Seeing the brothers lying senseless on beds of arrows, Sita laments that every sign and seer who promised her a long married life spoke falsely. Trijata tells her they live, for their army stands calm and the glow has not left their faces, and Sita, brought back to the Ashoka grove, sinks into the deepest sorrow.

Translation

And Sita, going in the aerial car
with Trijata beside her,
saw the army of the monkeys,
all of it, laid low.
Glad at heart, she saw them,
the flesh-eaters;
and the monkeys, stricken with grief,
at the sides of Rama and Lakshmana.
Then Sita saw the two lying
on beds of arrows,
Lakshmana and Rama,
senseless, racked by arrows:
the heroes, their armour shattered,
their bows flung far away,
every limb cut by shafts,
like clumps of arrow-reeds upon the ground.
Seeing the brothers there,
heroes, bulls among men,
Sita, stricken with grief,
wept bitterly, piteously.
Struck down by tears and sorrow, she gazed
on the two brothers, mighty as the gods,
and, thinking them dead,
in her grief she spoke these words.
