Four armies to four directions

Valmiki · Kishkindha Kanda
4.37.1–4.47.14 (CrEd 4.36.1–4.46.14)

Sugriva, recalled to his promise, summons every vanara on earth, and Rama reminds him that a king gives dharma, wealth and pleasure each its time. The vanara lord sends four armies to the four quarters, each told to search for Sita and return within a month, and Rama gives Hanuman, who goes south, his ring as a token for Sita. When the month is full the east, north and west come back without hope; only the southern band, with Hanuman, has not yet returned.
