The city's guardian; the night search

Valmiki · Sundara Kanda
5.2.1–5.13.60 (CrEd 5.2.1–5.11.60)

Hanuman lands on Trikuta and sees Lanka, a fortress no army could take, and resolves to enter it by night, made small. At the gate the city's own guardian, Lanka, bars his way; he fells her with his left fist, and she lets him in, for Brahma had told her that a monkey's victory over her would mean ruin for the rakshasas. He searches Ravana's palace room by room, takes Mandodari for Sita and rejects the thought, nearly despairs, and at last, in the Ashoka grove, sees Sita among the rakshasis and weeps for joy.

yadi rāmaḥ samudrāntāṃ medinīṃ parivartayet asyāḥ kṛte jagac cāpi yuktam ity eva me matiḥ rājyaṃ vā triṣu lokeṣu sītā vā janakātmajā trailokyarājyaṃ sakalaṃ sītāyā nāpnuyāt kalām

Translation

If Rama should overturn
the sea-bounded earth,
for her sake, and the world as well,
it would be right: so I judge.
Kingship of the three worlds,
or Sita, Janaka’s daughter:
the whole kingship of the three worlds
would not reach Sita’s smallest part.

Subtitle

For her, Rama could rightly
overturn the whole earth.
The three worlds' kingship
is not worth a sliver of Sita.

Translation

She sees not the rakshasis,
nor these trees of flower and fruit;
her heart in one place, surely
she sees only Rama.
Her, with her dark-edged hair,
her eyes like hundred-petalled lotuses,
worthy of joy, in sorrow: seeing her,
my own heart is pained.

Subtitle

She sees neither the rakshasis
nor these flowering trees:
she sees only Rama.
Seeing her grief, my heart aches.

Translation

Then, like a bed of lilies, the moon,
spotless itself, into the spotless sky
went up, a swan
upon blue water.
As if to be his friend,
with its radiance, spotless in light,
the moon with its cool rays
served the son of the Wind.
Then he saw Sita,
her face like the full moon,
sunk as if by loads of grief,
like a laden boat in the water.

Subtitle

The moon rose, as if to help him,
and by its light he saw Sita,
sunk under grief
like a laden boat in water.

Translation

Seated about the great-trunked tree,
ringing it round, the rakshasis;
and beneath it the queen,
the princess without blame,
in the midst of the grove of no-sorrow,
sunk in a sea of sorrow,
ringed by them there,
like Rohini beset by a planet.

Subtitle

In the midst of the grove of no-sorrow,
ringed by rakshasis,
she was sunk
in a sea of sorrow.

Translation

Joy beyond measure he found,
the son of the Wind, seeing Maithili;
and tears born of joy, seeing her,
the lady of the intoxicating eyes,
Hanuman shed there,
and bowed to Raghava.
And having bowed to Rama
and to Lakshmana, the valiant one,
delighted at the sight of Sita,
Hanuman stayed hidden.

Subtitle

Seeing Maithili, he wept for joy,
bowed to Rama and Lakshmana,
and stayed hidden.
