That sea none may assail

On the mountain’s crown stood Lanka,

Guarded by the rakshasa lord,
fashioned by Vishvakarma,
floating, as it were, in the air:

What will all the monkeys say
to me, gathered, when I am back?
‘Hero, you went there:

not having seen Janaka’s daughter?
And what will old Jambavan say,
and Angada?

was there a space
in that inner palace of Ravana
where the monkey did not go.

Seeking the fair-hipped princess,
the blameless one,
he roused the birds sleeping at ease,
the monkey, as he went.
By the flocks of birds flying up,
struck by their wings, the trees
let fall, of many hues and kinds,
their rains of flowers.
Strewn with flowers, he shone,
Hanuman, son of the Wind,
in the midst of the Ashoka grove,
like a mountain made of flowers.
Rushing to every quarter,
the monkey among the trees:
seeing him, all creatures
thought, ‘It is spring.’
