5.41.1–5.55.34 (CrEd 5.39.1–5.53.28)

Hanuman wrecks Ravana's grove and fights off the rakshasas, then lets Indrajit's Brahma weapon bind him so that he can face Ravana. In the court he tells the king to give Sita back; Vibhishana saves him from death, and Ravana orders his tail set on fire instead. With the burning tail Hanuman sets Lanka ablaze, fears he has burned Sita too, and learns that she is unharmed.

Translation

Little is left of this task;
I have seen the dark-eyed lady.
Passing over the three means,
the fourth is what shows itself here.
Soft words do no good with rakshasas;
gifts do not work with those heaped with wealth;
people proud of their strength are not won by division;
here it is force that pleases me.

these are the punishments named for an envoy;
but an envoy’s killing we have never even heard of.

Translation

You have spoken rightly:
the killing of an envoy is condemned.
But surely some punishment other than death
must be dealt him.
A monkey’s tail, they say,
is the ornament he loves;
so let it be set alight at once,
and let him go with it burnt.
