The woman on the riverbank

Valmiki · Uttara Kanda
7.49.1–24 (CrEd 7.48.1–20)

Weeping alone on the bank of the Ganga, where Lakshmana has left her, Sita is found by the sons of the sages, who run to tell Valmiki of a woman like Shri, crying out in her distress. Knowing by the sight his austerity has won who she is and why she has come, the sage goes down with guest-water, welcomes her as Dasharatha’s daughter-in-law and Janaka’s daughter, and declares her blameless. He leads her to the women ascetics near his hermitage and gives her into their loving care.
