Translation

kratuṃ samāpya tu tadā nyāyataḥ puruṣarṣabhaḥ
ṛtvigbhyo hi dadau rājā dharāṃ tāṃ kratuvardhanaḥ
Translation
To the hotar the king gave the east,
he who made his own line grow;
to the adhvaryu, the west,
to the brahman, the southern quarter;
to the udgatar, so, the north:
this was the fee ordained
for the horse sacrifice, the great rite,
by the Self-born long ago.
Then, the rite completed duly,
the bull among men,
the king who made the rite prosper,
gave that earth to the priests.

na bhūmyā kāryam asmākaṃ na hi śaktāḥ sma pālane
ratāḥ svādhyāyakaraṇe vayaṃ nityaṃ hi bhūmipa
niṣkrayaṃ kiṃ cid eveha prayacchatu bhavān iti
Translation
You alone are worthy, you alone,
to guard the whole wide earth.
We have no need of land;
we have no power to rule it.
In reciting the Veda we delight,
always, lord of the earth:
give us here, in its place,
some price, whatever it be.
लीला
पूरी धरती की रक्षा अकेले आप ही कर सकते हैं। हमें भूमि का क्या करना? हमसे राज नहीं चलेगा। हम तो वेद-पाठ में रमे रहते हैं, राजन्। बदले में कुछ और दे दीजिए।

glossy, like a lion’s;
graced with auspicious marks,
adorned with ornaments divine,
tall as a mountain’s peak,
striding like a proud tiger;
shaped like the sun himself,
like the flame of a blazing fire.
A vessel of refined gold,
its cover rimmed with silver,
brimming with divine payasa,
held like a beloved wife,
broad, he bore in his two arms,
as though wrought of magic.

so Vasishtha, in highest joy,
bestowed their names that day,
and for them had every rite performed,
the rites of birth and all the rest.

वाल्मीकि
भरतस्यापि शत्रुघ्नो लक्ष्मणावरजो हि सः ।
प्राणैः प्रियतरो नित्यं तस्य चासीत् तथा प्रियः ॥
bharatasyāpi śatrughno lakṣmaṇāvarajo hi saḥ
prāṇaiḥ priyataro nityaṃ tasya cāsīt tathā priyaḥ
Translation
And to Bharata, Shatrughna,
Lakshmana’s younger brother,
was ever dearer than life,
and Bharata as dear to him.
Subtitle
And Shatrughna was dearer than life
to Bharata.

स चतुर्भिर् महाभागैः पुत्रैर् दशरथः प्रियैः ।
बभूव परमप्रीतो देवैर् इव पितामहः ॥
sa caturbhir mahābhāgaiḥ putrair daśarathaḥ priyaiḥ
babhūva paramaprīto devair iva pitāmahaḥ
Translation
With his four sons, greatly blessed,
so dear to him, Dasharatha
was filled with highest joy,
as the Grandsire among the gods.
Subtitle
With his four dear sons
the king was as glad
as Brahma among the gods.
