English
To the hotar the king gave the east,
he who made his own line grow;
to the adhvaryu, the west,
to the brahman, the southern quarter;
to the udgatar, so, the north:
this was the fee ordained
for the horse sacrifice, the great rite,
by the Self-born long ago.
Then, the rite completed duly,
the bull among men,
the king who made the rite prosper,
gave that earth to the priests.

bhavān eva mahīṃ kṛtsnām eko rakṣitum arhati
na bhūmyā kāryam asmākaṃ na hi śaktāḥ sma pālane
ratāḥ svādhyāyakaraṇe vayaṃ nityaṃ hi bhūmipa
niṣkrayaṃ kiṃ cid eveha prayacchatu bhavān iti
English
You alone are worthy, you alone,
to guard the whole wide earth.
We have no need of land;
we have no power to rule it.
In reciting the Veda we delight,
always, lord of the earth:
give us here, in its place,
some price, whatever it be.

glossy, like a lion’s;
graced with auspicious marks,
adorned with ornaments divine,
tall as a mountain’s peak,
striding like a proud tiger;
shaped like the sun himself,
like the flame of a blazing fire.
A vessel of refined gold,
its cover rimmed with silver,
brimming with divine payasa,
held like a beloved wife,
broad, he bore in his two arms,
as though wrought of magic.

This payasa, tiger among men,
the gods themselves have made:
take it, giver of offspring,
blessed, increaser of health.

When the eleventh day had passed,
he performed the naming rite:
the eldest, great of soul, Rama;
Bharata, Kaikeyi’s son;
Sumitra’s son, Lakshmana,
and the other, Shatrughna:
so Vasishtha, in highest joy,
bestowed their names that day,
and for them had every rite performed,
the rites of birth and all the rest.
