Dadhimukha, keeper of the Madhuvana, flies to Sugriva to complain that Angada's vanaras have ravaged the honey grove, and Sugriva reads in it the sign that Sita has been found and sends for them. Hanuman bows to Rama and tells him the devi is unharmed and constant; Rama embraces him, then despairs before the sea until Sugriva rouses him. Hanuman describes Lanka's defences, and Rama vows to destroy the city.

English

Leaping over the sea,
thronged with great crocodiles,
we shall climb up into Lanka
and slay your enemy.
That a bridge be bound here,
that we may see the city
of that king of the rakshasas,
so act, Raghava.

English

Swiftly, by binding a bridge,
or else by drying the sea,
in every way am I able
to leap across this ocean.
How many forts has Lanka,
hard of access? Tell me that.
I wish to know it all, vanara,
as though I saw it myself.

Hear it: I shall tell you all,
by the craft of her defences,
how the city of Lanka is warded,
how her forces keep her safe.
With doors fast bolted,
and with mighty bars,
her gates are broad, and four,
and very great.

Her mighty wall is of gold,
hard to storm,
set all along with gems and coral,
beryl and pearl.
And all around, most fearsome,
most lovely, cold of water,
fathomless, full of crocodiles,
the moats where fishes dwell.

the city of Lanka is burned,

By whatever road it be,
let us cross Varuna’s home;
count the city of Lanka
destroyed by the vanaras.
