with the chief of the twice-born, righteous,
with the heads of guilds and the merchants,
with ministers, garlands and sweets in hand,
Bharata went, surrounded,

hailed by the bards.
His noble brother’s sandals
upon his head, the knower of dharma,
taking the white umbrella,
bright with white garlands,
and the white yak-tail fans,
fit for kings, adorned with gold,
gaunt from fasting, sorrowful,
clad in bark and black antelope skin,
hearing his brother was coming,
already come to joy,
he went out then to meet Rama,
the great-souled one, with his counsellors.

Palms joined, Bharata,
overjoyed, his face to Raghava,
with a welcome fit and true
then honoured Rama.
In the car Brahma made by thought,
Lakshmana’s elder brother
shone, his eyes large and long,
like a second wielder of the thunderbolt.
Then to the car’s front, to his brother,
Bharata then, bowing low,
paid homage, to Rama,
like the sun upon Meru.
Lifted into that car,
Bharata, true in valour,
came to Rama and, glad,
saluted him once more.
Kakutstha raised him up,
in sight at last after so long,
set Bharata on his lap,
and, glad, embraced him.

“Welcome to you, mighty-armed one,
who swell Kausalya’s joy!”
So, palms joined, all
the citizens said to Rama.
Those thousands of joined palms
held up by the citizens,

Bharata’s elder brother saw.
Those sandals of Rama’s
Bharata took himself,
and to the feet of the lord of men
the knower of dharma fitted them.
