The axe on the road

Valmiki · Bala Kanda
1.74.7–1.77.28 (CrEd 1.73.7–2.1.4)

On the road home from Mithila, fierce birds cry and the deer go round Dasharatha's company sunwise; out of a storm of darkness and ash comes Rama of Jamadagni's line, the axe on his shoulder, and he dares Rama to draw Vishnu's bow. Rama strings it and fits the arrow, and the Bhargava, knowing him for the lord of the gods, gives up the worlds he won by penance and goes. The king enters Ayodhya rejoicing, the queens receive the brides, Rama and Sita delight in each other through many seasons, and Bharata leaves with Shatrughna for his uncle's home.
