Messengers ride; Bharata's dream

Valmiki · Ayodhya Kanda
2.1.2–2.70.30 (CrEd 2.1.6–2.64.24)

தமிழ் · விரைவில் வருகிறது · The Tamil is coming

With the king dead and Rama gone, Vasishtha sends five swift messengers to Rajagriha to bring Bharata home, forbidding them to speak of the ruin of the Raghavas. That same night, in his uncle's city, Bharata dreams of his father falling into a pool of dung and riding south in a chariot drawn by donkeys, and wakes in dread. The messengers give their urgent summons; Bharata asks after his family, takes leave of the Kekaya king, and sets out with Shatrughna, laden with gifts.

Ministers, too, well liked,
trusted and full of virtue,
Ashvapati swiftly gave
to go with Bharata.
Elephants of Airavata’s line and Indrashira’s,
fair to look upon,
and swift donkeys, well yoked:
his uncle gave him these as wealth.
Reared in the inner palace,
with a tiger’s strength and courage,
fang-armed, huge of body,
hounds he gave as a parting gift.

Taking leave of his grandfather
and of Yudhajit, his uncle,
Bharata mounted the chariot
and went, with Shatrughna.
Yoking round-wheeled chariots,
more than a hundred,
with camels, oxen, horses, donkeys,
the servants followed Bharata as he went.
Guarded by an army, great-souled Bharata,
with his grandfather’s ministers, dear as his own self,
taking Shatrughna, free of foes,
left that house like a siddha leaving Indra’s world.
