चौदहवें दिन राज्य के कर्ता-धर्ता भरत को राजगद्दी सौंपना चाहते हैं; भरत अभिषेक-सामग्री की प्रदक्षिणा करके मना कर देते हैं, क्योंकि राज्य बड़े भाई का होता है, और वन तक मार्ग बनवाने की आज्ञा देते हैं ताकि राम को वहीं अभिषेक करके लौटा लाएँ। अगली सुबह वे अपनी जय के बाजे रुकवा देते हैं, और जब वसिष्ठ भरी सभा में उनसे पिता और भाई का दिया राज्य ग्रहण करने को कहते हैं, तो वे उत्तर देते हैं कि राज्य और वे स्वयं, दोनों राम के हैं, हाथ जोड़कर वन की ओर प्रणाम करते हैं, और सुमंत्र को सेना तैयार करने भेजते हैं।

On the fourteenth day the king-makers offer Bharata the throne; he walks round the consecration vessels and refuses, for the kingship is the eldest’s, and orders a road cut to the forest so that he can bring Rama back and consecrate him there. Next morning he silences the music that hails him as king, and when Vasishtha, before the full assembly, bids him take the kingdom his father and brother have given, he answers that the kingdom and he are both Rama’s, bows toward the forest with joined palms, and sends Sumantra to make the army ready.

Let craftsmen make a road
over the level ground and the rough,
and let guards go with them on the way,
men who know the hard places.

कारीगर रास्ता बनाएँ, ऊबड़-खाबड़ धरती को समतल करें; और दुर्गम राहों के जानकार रक्षक साथ चलें।

Subtitle

Let craftsmen build a road
and level the rough ground,

Bring the brahmins, the kshatriyas, the warriors,

Then a clamour, a mighty one,
rose up all around,
with chariots, horses and elephants,
as the people came in.
Then Bharata, as he came,
as the immortals greet Indra,
the people welcomed,
as once they welcomed Dasharatha.
Like a lake thronged with whales and serpents,
its waters still, its floor of gems and conches,
the hall, graced by Dasharatha’s son,
shone as of old, when Dasharatha was there.

ब्रह्मचर्य निभाने वाला, विद्या पढ़ा हुआ, धर्म पर चलने का यत्न करने वाला मुझ जैसा कोई, राज्य कैसे छीन ले?

One who has kept the student's vows,
finished his learning, and strives for dharma:

seize the kingdom?

jyeṣṭhaḥ śreṣṭhaś ca dharmātmā dilīpanahuṣopamaḥ labdhum arhati kākutstho rājyaṃ daśaratho yathā

Translation

The eldest, the best, righteous,
the equal of Dilipa and Nahusha,
Kakutstha is worthy of the kingdom,
as Dasharatha was.

लीला

वे सबसे बड़े हैं, सबसे श्रेष्ठ हैं, धर्मात्मा हैं, दिलीप और नहुष जैसे। जैसे महाराज दशरथ थे, वैसे ही राज्य के अधिकारी काकुत्स्थ राम हैं।

Subtitle

He is the eldest and the best,
righteous, like Dilipa and Nahusha.
Kakutstha deserves the kingdom,
as Dasharatha did.

Translation

A sin the noble shun,
that leads not to heaven: if I did it,
I would be, in the world,
the shame of the Ikshvaku house.

लीला

अगर मैं यह पाप करूँ, जो कोई सज्जन नहीं करता, जो स्वर्ग से दूर ले जाता है, तो संसार में मैं इक्ष्वाकु कुल का कलंक कहलाऊँगा।

Subtitle

If I did this sin,
which no noble man would do,
I would be the shame
of the Ikshvakus in the world.

What my mother did was a sin;
I do not approve it.

I bow to him in the forest.

मैं तो राम के ही पीछे चलूँगा। वही राजा हैं, मनुष्यों में श्रेष्ठ। राघव तो तीनों लोकों के राज्य के योग्य हैं।

Subtitle

I follow Rama alone.
He is the king, the best of men.

सुमंत्र, शीघ्र उठिए, जाइए, सेनापतियों को बुला लाइए। जगत के हित के लिए, मैं राम को मनाकर लौटा लाना चाहता हूँ।

Subtitle

Rise at once, Sumantra, go:
call the army's chiefs.
I would win Rama's grace and bring him home,
for the good of the world.
