The throne refused

Valmiki · Ayodhya Kanda
2.79.1–2.82.32 (CrEd 2.73.1–2.76.30)

On the fourteenth day the king-makers offer Bharata the throne; he walks round the consecration vessels and refuses, for the kingship is the eldest’s, and orders a road cut to the forest so that he can bring Rama back and consecrate him there. Next morning he silences the music that hails him as king, and when Vasishtha, before the full assembly, bids him take the kingdom his father and brother have given, he answers that the kingdom and he are both Rama’s, bows toward the forest with joined palms, and sends Sumantra to make the army ready.
