5.1.50–210 (CrEd 5.1.46–190)

Hanuman flies over the sea, and the Ocean, honouring the Ikshvakus, raises golden Mainaka from the water to give him rest; Hanuman takes the mountain for an obstacle and knocks it down, then gently declines its welcome, and Indra grants Mainaka freedom from fear. The gods send Surasa, mother of the nagas, to test him in a rakshasa's form; he outwits her, passing in and out of her mouth. He kills the shadow-seizing rakshasi Simhika, shrinks to his own form and comes down on Mount Lamba, within sight of Lanka.

Translation

So saying to Surasa, in anger,
ten yojanas long,
ten yojanas wide
Hanuman became.
Seeing him like a cloud,
ten yojanas long,
Surasa too made her mouth
twenty yojanas wide.
Then Hanuman, in anger,
grew thirty yojanas long;
Surasa made her mouth
forty yojanas high.
Heroic Hanuman became
fifty yojanas tall;
Surasa made her mouth
sixty yojanas wide.
And so heroic Hanuman
grew seventy yojanas tall;
Surasa made her mouth
eighty yojanas wide.
Hanuman, like a mountain,
grew ninety yojanas tall;
Surasa made her mouth
a hundred yojanas wide.

Translation

Knowing her truly
for Simhika, the wise vanara
grew vast of body,
like a rain cloud in the monsoon.
She, seeing the great vanara’s
body growing,
stretched open her mouth,
wide as the underworld and the sky.
Then he saw
her huge and hideous mouth,
the measure of her body, the wise one,
and her vitals, the great vanara.
Into her gaping mouth
the vanara, diamond-hard of frame,
making himself small in a moment,
dropped, mighty as he was.
Sinking into her mouth
the siddhas and charanas saw him,
like the full moon
swallowed by Rahu at the moon’s change.
Then, tearing out her vitals
with his sharp nails, the vanara
sprang up with speed,
swift as thought.
Seeing Simhika slain
by the vanara, and fallen,
the beings who move in the sky
spoke to that bull among leapers.

Translation

Then, drawing in that body
that was like a mountain,
he returned to his own nature,
self-possessed, like one freed of delusion.
Wearing a fair form, now this, now that,
he reached the sea’s far shore,
his form past all others’ knowing,
himself in hand, his purpose weighed.
Then on a peak of Lamba, rich,
many-crested, down he came,
amid ketaka, uddalaka and coconut,
the great one, like a great mountain’s peak.
The sea, with its danavas and serpents,
he crossed by strength, garlanded with great waves;
and landing then on the great ocean’s shore,
he saw Lanka, like Amaravati.

Subtitle

He shrank to his own form,
