Golden-centred Mainaka,
hearing the salt sea,
sprang swiftly from the water
with his great trees and creepers.
Breaking the waters of the sea,
he rose up high,
as, breaking through a cloud,
the sun of blazing rays,
with peaks made all of gold,
with kinnaras and great serpents,
bright as the rising sun,
as if they scraped the sky.
With the golden peaks
of that mountain upraised,
the sky, grey as a blade,
turned to a golden glow.
With peaks of gold
blazing by their own light,
like a hundred suns
stood the best of mountains.

Knowing her truly
for Simhika, the wise vanara
grew vast of body,
like a rain cloud in the monsoon.
She, seeing the great vanara’s
body growing,
stretched open her mouth,
wide as the underworld and the sky.
Then he saw
her huge and hideous mouth,
the measure of her body, the wise one,
and her vitals, the great vanara.
Into her gaping mouth
the vanara, diamond-hard of frame,
making himself small in a moment,
dropped, mighty as he was.
Sinking into her mouth
the siddhas and charanas saw him,
like the full moon
swallowed by Rahu at the moon’s change.
Then, tearing out her vitals
with his sharp nails, the vanara
sprang up with speed,
swift as thought.
Seeing Simhika slain
by the vanara, and fallen,
the beings who move in the sky
spoke to that bull among leapers.

Then, drawing in that body
that was like a mountain,
he returned to his own nature,
self-possessed, like one freed of delusion.
Wearing a fair form, now this, now that,
he reached the sea’s far shore,
his form past all others’ knowing,
himself in hand, his purpose weighed.
Then on a peak of Lamba, rich,
many-crested, down he came,
amid ketaka, uddalaka and coconut,
the great one, like a great mountain’s peak.
The sea, with its danavas and serpents,
he crossed by strength, garlanded with great waves;
and landing then on the great ocean’s shore,
he saw Lanka, like Amaravati.
