Tataka, and the guarded fire

Valmiki · Bala Kanda
1.24.1–1.30.26 (CrEd 1.23.1–1.29.23)

தமிழ் · விரைவில் வருகிறது · The Tamil is coming

Crossing the Ganga, Vishvamitra leads Rama and Lakshmana into the dreadful forest of the yakshi Tataka, who lays the lands of Malada and Karusha waste. At the sage's word, which his father bade him obey, Rama kills her, and the pleased sage gives him the weapons of the gods. At Siddhashrama the princes guard the sage's rite for six sleepless nights; when Maricha and Subahu fall on it, Rama hurls Maricha into the sea with the Manava weapon and kills Subahu and the rest.

with a mighty cloud of dust

Then, resorting to illusion,

and at that Raghava grew angry.
Her great rain of stones
with a rain of arrows Raghava
warded off, and as she rushed on
he cut away her arms with feathered shafts.
Then, her arms severed, spent,
roaring close at hand,
Saumitri, in his anger, left her
shorn of ears and nose-tip.
