Fourteen years with the sandals

Valmiki · Ayodhya Kanda
2.113.1–2.115.27 (CrEd 2.105.1–2.107.22)

தமிழ் · விரைவில் வருகிறது · The Tamil is coming

With Rama's sandals on his head, Bharata turns back from Chitrakuta, tells the sage Bharadvaja how Rama gave them to him for the kingdom, and drives into an Ayodhya dark and silent, like a cave bereft of its lion. He will not rule from the city: at Nandigram, in bark and matted hair, he consecrates the sandals and lays every matter of government before them, waiting for Rama's return.

Then, setting the sandals on his head,
Bharata, glad at heart,
mounted his chariot
with Shatrughna at his side.
Vasishtha and Vamadeva,
and Jabali, firm in his vows,
all the ministers, honoured for counsel,
went on ahead.
Along the lovely Mandakini
they went, facing the east,
keeping on their right
the great mountain Chitrakuta.
Gazing at its thousand ores,
lovely, of many hues,
Bharata went along its flank,
and his army with him.
