Translation
Hearing these words, Rama
said this to Sugriva:
“From what cause did this enmity arise?

यह वैर हुआ किस कारण? मैं सच-सच सुनना चाहता हूँ।

What gave rise to this enmity?
I want to hear the truth of it.

Translation
Tell it gladly, and trusting;
as soon as the bow is strung,
the arrow is loosed from my hand,

निश्चिंत होकर, ख़ुशी से कहो। धनुष चढ़ा नहीं कि बाण छूटा, और तुम्हारा शत्रु धराशायी।
Subtitle
Tell it gladly, without fear.
My bow strung, the arrow loosed,
your enemy struck down.

Translation
So spoken to by Kakutstha,
the great-souled, Sugriva
felt a joy beyond all measure,
and with him his four vanaras.
Then, his face alight with joy,
Sugriva, to Lakshmana’s elder,
the true cause of the enmity
began to tell.

बाप-दादों का वह बड़ा राज्य वे चलाते रहे, और मैं हर घड़ी, एक सेवक की तरह, सिर झुकाए उनके आगे खड़ा रहा।

मायावी नाम का एक तेजस्वी असुर था, दुंदुभि का बड़ा भाई। एक स्त्री को लेकर उसका वाली से भारी वैर था; यह बात दूर-दूर तक जानी जाती थी।
Subtitle
There was a mighty asura, Mayavi,
Dundubhi's elder brother.
He and Vali had a great feud
over a woman, known far and wide.

एक रात, जब सब सो रहे थे, वह किष्किंधा के द्वार पर आ धमका। क्रोध में दहाड़ता हुआ, वह वाली को रण के लिए ललकारने लगा।

भैया गहरी नींद में थे। वह भयानक दहाड़ सुनी, तो वाली से सहा न गया। वे उसी पल झपटकर बाहर निकले।

and Vali could not bear it.

Out he went, in anger,
to slay that greatest of asuras,
held back then by the women,

वे क्रोध में भरकर उस महा-असुर को मारने निकले। स्त्रियों ने उन्हें रोकना चाहा, और मैंने भी, सिर झुकाकर।
Subtitle
He rushed out in anger
to kill that great asura.
The women tried to hold him back,
and so did I, bowing low.

a great cleft in the earth:

लीला
धरती में एक बड़ी खोह थी, घास से ढकी, जहाँ पहुँचना कठिन था। असुर झपटकर उसमें घुस गया। हम दोनों वहाँ पहुँचकर ठिठक गए।
Subtitle
A great cleft in the earth,
hidden by grass, hard to reach:
the asura dashed into it.
We reached it, and stopped.

सुग्रीव, तुम यहीं ठहरो। गुफा के द्वार पर चौकस रहना, जब तक मैं भीतर जाकर शत्रु को रण में मार न दूँ।
Subtitle
Stay here, Sugriva,
watchful at the mouth of the cave,
